A Piece of the Picture

Hebrews 1:1-2 says, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”
This was God’s final word. God did not leave us without a message. He is a communicator. Ever since the beginning of creation, in the garden of Eden, God would always communicate the very message of life. The Bible we have in our hands is not only a record of God’s endeavour to communicate but is itself a part of God’s communication. People can discover many things on earth and in the heavens above, but only God can reveal to people the spiritual truth that is so vital in life. In the Old Testament God revealed Himself in various ways and led them one step at a time - just like a father, who leads his child through the first faltering steps of walking.
What is the problem that made it necessary for God to reveal Himself and found it important to communicate with us? SIN is the issue. Sin has so blinded the minds of all people. In spite of that condition, God gradually, lovingly and beautifully reveals small portions of truth one at a time. Why did God have to work gradually in the time past? Simply because our mind has been marred by sin and we are slow to understand about spiritual truths.
As Hebrews 1:1-2 indicates (to use a word picture) that the Old Testament prophets tirelessly worked putting together a huge puzzle. We can only imagine God handing them a piece of the picture one at a time and each fragment was so accurate but was only a part of the total picture. This took time, but God never worked too soon or too late. His was always on time. The last piece of the puzzle finally took its shape with the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ is the fulfillment of all the prophecies (the puzzles) mentioned by the prophets.
In the Old Testament the people had to look for God’s messengers to hear God’s words. In fact, even the prophets could only partially understand as shown in: 1 Peter 1:10-12 “Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.”
God began His communication long before the coming of Christ. Praise God, He presented to us His final communication—His final last Word in the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ our loving Saviour. This is all by grace, He made the first ‘move.’ How about you?
